In a woman Gonorrhea may also cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) which affects about 1 million women in the United States every year. Usually the symptoms of PID may be quite mild or may be quite severe causing abdominal pain and fever. As well PID may lead to internal abscesses as well as long lasting pelvic pain. Also PID may affect the fallopian tubes bad enough to cause infertility or increase the chances of ectopic pregnancy and this is a life threatening condition in which a fertilized egg grows outside of a woman's uterus and usually in a fallopian tube.
